Designer Picks : Laura’s Coastal Comfort

Coastal Comfort

There is nothing more soothing than the sound of the ocean, so why not bring this coastal calmness inside your home. With the heat that summer brings, it is so nice to retreat to a cool place to relax & unwind.

Taking inspiration from the sea, Benjamin Moore created a coastal palette of colours in their 2013 trends. They have combined the relaxing & soothing colours of Stratton Blue (HC-142), Lemon Sorbet (2019-60) and Tranquility (AF-490), with the watery hue of HC-145 Van Courtland blue and the freshness of Simply White (OC-117). Together this palette gives a fresh casual look and a seaside relaxing atmosphere.

To ground this palette, add in natural accessories with lots of different textures. Try a feature wall or back a bookcase with grasscloth- the one featured above is Beijing Grasscloth from Joanne Fabrics. There are some beautiful natural reed window coverings in the Levelor blind collection for your windows and ground the room with a sisal rug. Distressed wood furniture, rope & hyacinth accessories along with the classic seaside features of glass and pottery will finish off the look.

For a pop of colour there are so many fun fabrics to choose from in the coastal palette. Don’t be afraid to mix up the patterns of fabric for pillows, or reupholster a chair or stool.

And if the relaxing seaside makes you want to nod off…..there is an oversized hammock for the porch and a perfect spot for an afternoon nap.

Colour Of The Month : Orange Nectar

mhd_cotm_orange nectar

Orange Nectar 2013-20, is our Benjamin Moore Colour Of The Month. Benjamin Moore describes this vibrant orange shade; “A touch of black calms this rich, decorative shade of orange that conjures images of a hummingbird feasting on a flower’s sweet nectar.” This bright, bold tone of orange adds a great punch of colour for any space in your home and looks very chic when paired with black and white accents.

Where would you add Orange Nectar 2013-20 to your home?

Bohemian interiors are inspired primarily by India and Morocco, using mixtures of prints, bold colours, traditional textiles and art. Bohemian Chic represents a space designed using authentic or inspired colours and patterns while mixing with more modern pieces and neutral colours. Above we have featured eight inspirational Bohemian Chic spaces and as you can see, each space has a varying degree of authentic Bohemian vibe and traditional or modern decor.

Below we have featured a great mix of decor that suits a Bohemian Chic space: Brass accessories, bold art, a mixture of textures and materials and graphic patterns in bright colours.

Designer Picks : Laura’s Knitted Comforts

Knitted decor accessories have been appearing in all forms. This handcrafted influence is part of Benjamin Moore’s 2013 Colour Pulse called Flow.  Flow represents part of this years emerging trends, where something familiar from our past is being shaped into the new decor of today  with a modern twist. We are drawn to memories of the past, when times were simple and uncomplicated; these objects and memories bring warmth and comfort into our homes. Modern knitted decor comes in a full range of colours, from the traditional cream inspired by cableknit sweaters to a vibrant mix that adds a touch of texture and colour to a room. I was inspired by Benjamin Moore’s Colour Stories palette and the first colour I was drawn to just happened to be named Cable knit sweater!  (CSP-650) is described as a soft blue that reminds us of a cozy woven sweater on a brisk winter day. I have paired this steely blue with CSP-245, a warm white reminiscent of old porcelain platters called Stoneware and CSP-840, barefoot in the grass.

Product Images: All available at Mountain Home Decor in Whistler, BC. 1. Assorted knit throw blankets, 2. Knitted small vases, 3. Cable knit candles, 4. Soft cream blanket, 5. Assorted thick knit poufs.

Designer Picks : Katelyn’s Tribal Influence

MHD_designer picks_Katelyns tribal influence

I cannot help but continue to find myself inspired by tribal influences. Perhaps it is propelled by my unshakeable desire to travel. Either way, some of my favourite homes incorporate art and treasures from the owner’s travels. The thing I love most about these treasures is that they always seem to have such wonderful stories of adventure behind them. Why not surround yourself with tokens of your adventures; accomplished or imaginary.

Tribal for 2013 focuses on colour and optimism. It also encourages a bit of cheekiness with mismatched patterns and textures. We continue to see a focus on handmade goods as well as fun geometric prints, florals and bold stripes. Saturated colour pops with crisp black, white and shades of gray.

I started by playing with some fun colourful fabrics from Kravet that combine different techniques such as embroidery and screen printing. I find the variety of colour and texture adds interest and depth. Playing with the mismatched nature of this trend I decided to interject bold striped wallpaper, which I would use as an accent in the space. The sofa is low set and is simplistic in its detailing with the sunken side cushions. The dark stained frame on the sofa nicely compliments the round drum-like end table with its geometric ribs which play with positive and negative space. The hand blown glass pendant lamps interject colour in a more transparent form while the handmade ceramic planters play with textured opacity. Tying it all together is Benjamin Moore’s Rose Parade 2086-20, Blue 2066-10 and Black Horizon 2132-30 which I also see as being used in accents in a predominantly white space.
